MANGALURU: The growing demand for Udupi saris in the last three years has led students from fashion designing institutes across India to reach out to the Kadike Trust, to understand and document the Udupi sari design. In 2018, Mamatha Rai and her husband BC Shetty took up the Udupi sari revival project by launching Kadike Trust at Talipady Weavers Society (TWS) in Kinnigoli. Currently, 70 weavers are employed in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi and in TWS the number of weavers has increased to 35 from eight. Udupi Saris, a brand that enjoys GI tag, carry the name of the weaver and simple innovations in natural dyeing, contemporary designs and ikat, help in adding value to the saris.
